Course Syllabus

Fine Arts is a study of representative works of Art and Music through history.  The course includes an overview of the elements of Art and Music and how artists and composers use these elements to create masterpieces.  The student will experience works of Art and Music to understand expressive elements and develop aesthetic awareness.  The relationship of Art and Music with history, culture, politics, and religion will be explored.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the major periods of visual and musical expression.
  2. Identify and use the body of terms used in the analysis of art and music.
  3. Analyze and categorize major masterpieces in Western music and art.
  4. Relate cultural and religious impact on the development of art and music in general, as well as specific works of art and music.
  5. Write clearly about perceptions and responses to Western art and music.

Outcomes:

The following outcomes are expected of each student for this course:

  1. Use terminology related to art and music in discussion and writing about art and music.
  2. Develop an awareness of aesthetic effects of art and music and demonstrate that awareness through the interpretation and discussion of masterpieces.
  3. Demonstrate ability to classify works of art and music correctly in different periods.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of major artists and art works.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of major composers and compositions.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of different genres of art (ex. painting, sculpture, architecture) and music (ex. opera, symphonies, chamber works).

My Arts Lab Access Card

My Arts Lab is a collection of online learning tools that is provided by Pearson Publishing specifically selected for use in this course.  Access to these materials is required for the course.  Students need to purchase the textbook that is bundled with the My Arts Lab access card through the Hammes Bookstore at Olivet Nazarene University.

If the book is purchased elsewhere without the My Arts Lab access card, the card may be purchased separately. The cost of the access card sold separately is significant, more than $150.

Supplemental Materials:

The School of Graduate and Continuing Studies has provided an APA Title page/Template that all students are required to use for written submissions. The certification of authorship must be digitally signed on the title page of all written work. To access the template, log in to My.Olivet.
